David F. Sweeney
No. 320

We can trace our branch (RI, USA) of the family back through David F. born in Willimantic Con. Apr10, 1897. Died Prov. RI 1953. His father was David (probably Patrick D). who was born in 1861 in Bloomfield Conn. We can,t make the next step Ireland. We believe Patrick D.'s father was John, born in 1825 in Ireland, But thats a quess. There are a lot of Sweeneys in eastern Conn. who are probably related. Can anyone make the jump to Ireland?

Hello Sweeney Clan,

My cousins and I have been looking for our roots for nearly 40 years. Thomas Sweeney was transported to Australia in 1826 on the "Regalia" He was a native of Sligo, and tried in Fermanagh for stealing a cow. Born circa 1799, parents unknown. He was assigned to Alexander McLeod at Luskentyre in the Hunter Valley. In 1829 he was an accessory to a robbery there and was transported again to Morton Bay for 3 years.

In 1832 he was returned to Port Jackson (Sydney) and freed. Knowing the land in the Hunter Valley he returned there to resume what he knew best. He was a shepherd. He partnered Mary Gillespie who travelled to Port Jackson with her aunts and 8 cousins on the convict ship "Southworth" in 1832. Mary and her family were joining their convict members at the Crown's expense as this indulgence was granted to all well behaved convicts.

On Mary's death certificate in 1832 it states that she had 7 children.
We have found the following:

Bridget born Black Creek (Branxton) 1834 married James Freel in 1834 then partnered and eventually married William Raisbeck in 1909, she died in 1918.
Mary born circa 1836 married 1850 William Wallace, then partnered William Jones she died in 1926 at Gunnedah
Catherine born circa 1838 married 1856 John Jackson, 2 children were born in 1857 Mary Ann, Susannah 1862 after which the whereabouts of the couple are unknown.
John born 1841 at Black Creek (Branxton) never married, died at Gunnedah 1883
Patrick born 1841 at Black Creek (Branxton) married Mary Ann Scanlan nee O'Brien Surat, Queensland, died 1889

There is a Thomas Sweeney marrying Bridget Mooney in 1872 at East Maitland, a few miles away from Branxton
witnesses to the marriage were Cornelius Egan and Margaret Sweeny. This couple moved to Murrurundi and had
Margaret born 1874, Bridget born 1876, Patrick born 1879. They then moved to Gunnedah and Rosanna was born in 1882, and Elizabeth Esther was born in 1884.

The co-incidences are 1. Mary Gillespie's cousin Ann, married Brien/Bryan Egan in 1843, most of the children have been identified except for 1 male who could be Cornelius, unfortunately his birth cannot be found.

Bridget's Sweeney/Freel's eldest daughter was called Esther Jane.

Patrick could have been named after his uncle.

Thomas jnr. Mary Jnr and John all ended up in Gunnedah.

I am looking for any information on the Sweeney families in Sligo pre 1826, and for any connections to the 7 children mentioned.

Looking forward to hearing you all.

ANNE

My Name is Dara Byrne & I am from Drogheda, Co. Louth.

My grandmother is trying to trace her fathers family their name being Sweeney. All the information she has is that 'three brothers and there mother came from Ireland during the famine to England. They carried with them a baby who grew up and married and Irish girl. They had a son who was born in Gateshead, Co. Durham and called Patrick, he was my grandmothers father. I know its not a lot to go on but she remembers being told that the family who emigrated during the famine came from Waterford. Can anyone help - please.

Hi. My name is Tanya Sweeney. I live in Moncton, N.B. Canada. My father Douglas Sweeney and my brother Sean both died last year, so I find myself wondering about my roots lately. My father was always interested in them. I only have a little info from an album my father kept: Douglas William Sweeney (my dad) child of John Walter Sweeney (Jack) & Iris Mary Moody. John & James Sweeney's parents>William Thomas Sweeney & Marvel Alexandria Sweeney (Mann). Her parents-Harry N Mann & Minnie Bernice Lilley (Mann). William's parents> John Sweeney & Hannah Hayes. That's not a lot & doesn't go back too far but maybe you can help a little. Thanks a lot. Tanya
