George P. Farragher
No. 390

My name is George P. Sweeney Farragher. I am the son of Gean (Eugene) Sweeney, of Sharon PA, USA. My father assumed the name Farragher, (reason unknown), the name of his mother's first husband, upon entering the military during WWII. My grandmother was Mary O'Hara Farragher Sweeney, also of Sharon PA, USA. I have very little details of my grandfather, who died at an early age, of complications to injuries incurred during WWI. He was a plumber in Sharon PA.

My Father had several siblings. Rosemary Farragher, George Farragher, John Farragher, Howard Sweeney, Margaret (Peg) Sweeney Connelly, and William (Bill) Sweeney. He was married to Margaret E. (Szalay) Sweeney Farragher. They had two sons, my brother Robert Emmett Sweeney Farragher (Palentine) Illinois, USA) and I. We know of one half brother born to a women my father lived with in Louisiana. His name is unknown.

My father, also a disabled US Military veteran, died on August 10, 1992, at the Veterans Hospital in Harrisburg PA. He is buried at Indian Town Gap National Cemetery, Pennsylvania, USA. During his life my father lived in Sharon, PA., Youngstown, Ohio, New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Sarasota, Florida, Harrisburg Pennsylvania, Albany, New York, (?), etc. He was an entrepreneur and had several businesses during his lifetime, including, antiques, plumbing services, restaurants, amusements, etc. Upon his death no assets were found.

I hope this helps and other party searching for information on family members. Any information that anyone would be able to provide me would be greatly appreciated, and shared with all.

Thank You Sweeney's

George P. Farragher

Andrew J. Sweeney
No. 392

Hello fellow Sweeneys,

My name is Andrew James Sweeney, originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. I am seeking the birthplace and hopefully relatives of my Grandfather:

Andrew Joseph Sweeney
Born: 25 March, 1856 possibly in County Sligo or County Mayo, Ireland. His parents were Roger Sweeney & Nora Gilmore. (No dates or places)

He emigrated to the United States around 1870 and later earned his U.S. citizenship in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 5th, 1876.

On June 21st, 1893 he married Mary Elizabeth Kelleher, whose parents, Daniel Kelleher and Margaret Meehan are thought to have come to Philadelphia from County Cork, Ireland. My father, Austin Joseph Sweeney was born on January 9, 1901 in Philadelphia. Both my grandparents died years before my birth and I have only a few living cousins that are in the same boat as me. (born too late)

I have considerable documentation (Naturalization papers, application for marriage license, death certificate, etc.) but all say only IRELAND as his place of birth even thought there were spaces provided for City & County. (maybe he was trying to hide?)

Do any of these Sweeneys sound familiar to anyone? I thank you in advance for any help you might provide.

Andrew J. Sweeney

I am looking for the parents of Patrick Sweeney born in 1803 in Limerick, Ireland. He married Mary Burke (or Bourke) born 1806, also from Limerick. Our family has traced our roots back to him, but we have now reached a deadend. I will appreciate any assistance you can provide.

Sincerely,

Donna Sweeney

Thomas Hefter
No. 396

My maternal great grandparents were Dennis and Julia (Bryant) McSWEENEY. They were Catholic in religion and came to the U.S.A. ca. 1865. They had four children in N.Y. (one birth record suggested Clyde, N.Y. and another showed the birthplace as Buffalo).

Dennis listed his occupation as "Railroad Contractor". The family subsequently had one child in Topeka, KS and another in Little Rock, AR. but they settled first in Boonville, MO (1870 census) and then to Springfield, MO. (1880 census and town records). Dennis was in city government there as the "Street Commissioner" for 1876-78. In 1880, Dennis and his son Dennis Jr. both died suddenly (pneumonia and typhoid fever). Dennis Jr. was listed as a civil engineer working away from home in the Cole Camp rail project. Julia died shortly thereafter.

The origins of Dennis and Julia in Ireland are uncertain. I haven't found passenger records and family stories are unreliable. The stories suggest anything from Rathmullen in Donegal to Leitrim to County Cork. The last may be the most likely.

I'm now in my senior years and all likely family sources have passed. Any help or advice would be most appreciated.

Tom
