Looking for Agnes Sweeny who I think was born in Strokestown, Roscommon about 1864. She emigrated to the US and married Francis John McGourty. He emigrated about 1873. They lived in San Francisco, California and raised three children, Francis T, Charles and Catherine. Francis T. is my Grandfather. Trying to find out from where they come from in Ireland.

My name is Kevin Sweeney, I am looking for information on my Grandfathers family. His name was Patrick Mac Sweeney born in Blackrock Dublin around 1883. He joined the British Army at the turn of the century and served through out the first world war Leaving the Army in 1930. He married Patricia Sarah Stritch of Longford in 1920. Certainly his sisters Anne Mary emigrated to America and possibly a brother, but because of his service he was disowned by his family and had no contact after 1916-18 approx.

Looking for information on my GrandFather Martin P. Sweeney. He said that he was born in Ballyvaughan, County Clare between 1862 and 1864. Immigrated to Torrington, Connecticut in 1890 and died there in 1939. I was in Ballyvaughan this year and last year without any luck in findings church records of his birth. At least three brothers and sisters immigrated with him (Margaret, Patrick and Dennis). Married Ellen Doolan (Born Oct. 29, 1864) from Drombane, Upperchurch parish, County Tipperary in 1894.

I am a son of a son of a son who maintains the name of Sweeney. My sister, Tina Marie just found out alot about our Grandfather, William Sweeney whose father was John Sweeney who married Margret Maguire in Pottisville, PA. They had 3 sons: my grandfather William, and 2 other sons, Edward & Joseph. My grandfather was borned on 5/4/1873. As a typical Sweeney he never said much about his upbrining or about his past. We suspect he might have had something to do with the Molly Maguires who were made very famous for sticking up for other peoples right about the turn of the century. My grandfather worked on the canal system as did one of his brothers. They eventually moved down to Philly and raised a big family in Lieperville, PA which is outside of ChesterThanks, Joe Sweeney.

No. 289

My name is Karen French and I live in Tasmania, Australia.

I am trying to trace the family and other descendants of Michael Sweeney (Sweeny, Swiny), my ggggrandfather.

Michael was born circa 1819 in Co. Cork, Ireland. His mother was Mary and he was a brother to Bryan, John, Daniel and Margaret. This information was gained from his convict record and is the only information I have about his family in Ireland.

Michael worked as a farm labourer until he was tried in Cork on 25th June, 1849 for perjury and was sentenced to 7 years transportation to Van Dieman's Land. He departed Cork on 24th November, 1852 among 342 other male convicts aboard the "Rodney" and arrived in Hobart Town on 12th February, 1853.

Michael was pardoned in 1855. In 1854 he married Mary McQuain (McQuane) from Limerick, Ireland. She had been transported for receiving stolen goods.
Their children were Sarah, Daniel, Michael, Mary-Ann, Jack (or John), Anthony, Margaret and Honora(?).

I look forward to hearing from anyone with a connection to my Michael.

Karen.
