No. 160

Greetings from Louisiana! My GGGrandfather Hugh Sweeney emigrated from Ireland in 1853, arriving in Boston, Mass.. Hugh b. Feb. 1820 m. Bridget Sweeney(maiden name unknown) b. 1817 children: Mary A. b. 1846, Bernard b. 1848, Joseph A. 1850. They were passengers on the "Daniel Webster" from Liverpool to Boston. According to the passenger list for the Port of Boston, they were the only Sweeney's on that particular ship.
Three additional children were born to Hugh and Bridget, Christopher b. 1854 Boston, Jane b. 1859, and Hugh b. 1864. My Sweeney's remained in Boston through 1901, when Hugh died at age 80. Bridget passed sometime between 1880 and 1900.
As you all know, it is so very hard to trace our Irish Heritage, especially when all documents say "Ireland" and nothing else and Boston being a large city in the 1800's compounds the problem.
It is my hope, that someone will see my message and it will trigger a memory!

Thanks,
Karen Wise

My name is Kevin Swaney. I am looking for information on my familys past but no too little. I can tell you what i have been told. Our family first left Ireland from County Cork (closest i could narrow it too) for france where the name McSweeney was pronounced McSwaney [long a] and then to America where the Mc was dropped. They settled in northern pennsyvania. My grandparents were Homer Lawrence and Grace E. Swaney, but unfortunately i begin to run into blanks from there.
Any help that could be provided would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Kevin L. Swaney.

Irene Sweeney Townsley
No. 164

Hi, my name is Irene Sweeney Townsley, nee Porteous. Been researching Sweeney family and can't get past ggg.grandparents who were Mary Green and William Sweeney although we have their son's death certificate which gives William's name as Orwell (or Powell?). Mary Sweeney nee Green is listed in the 1881 census in Edinburgh as being aged 50 and born in Ireland. Can't find any record of marriage or births for William and Mary. We also know their son William was born in Glasgow around 1854.
