Elizabeth Wereley
No. 130
Hello Sweeneys!
I am Elizabeth Wereley from Easton, Pennsylvania USA and my grandmother was
a Sweeney, Mary Bernice Elizabeth Sweeney Godwin. We have traced her family
back to her great-grandfather Michael Francis Sweeney born August 31, 1802
in Kilglass, County Sligo, Ireland and died in February 13, 1894
in Cherry, Sullivan County, PA USA. He married Catherine Sweeney (maiden
name same!) born December 24, 1811 Kilglass County Sligo, Ireland and died
June 24, 1877 in Sullivan County PA USA somewhere between 1829 - 1830 in
County Sligo, Ireland. They immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1830.
Michael worked on the Rideau Canal between the St Lawerence River and Ottawa
Canada until its completion. They then followed canal workers thru the
states of Maine, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Michael
apparently worked as a canal digger until they eventually settled in
Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. After settling down, he made a living as a
farmer. We believe Michael's father's name was Owen and his mother's name
to have been Catherine Hebren. Two of Michael's brothers joined him in
Pennsylvania; they were Patrick born c. 1815 in Kilglass, County
Sligo,Ireland, Martin born c 1811 also in Kilglass, County Sligo,Ireland,
and James birthdate unknown. The family centered around Bradford and
Sullivan Counties in Pennsylvania, extending in later years to Towanda
Pennsylvania, and Corning and Elmira New York.
Any assistance in locating information on Michael's parents or other
siblings or on Catherine's parents would be greatly appreciated.

My name is Michael J. Sweeney, and I am from Houston Texas.
I have been doing genealogy research for the past twelve years. In the last few years I have been working on my Irish roots. My great grandfather was Edward Sweeney who married Bridget Madigan on Feb 13, 1831 in the parish of Coolcappagh, townland of Cooltomin, Ireland. They had seven children, the youngest was Michael Sweeney, my grandfather, born Sep. 29,1849. He came to the United States, by himself, in the mid 1800's. He worked in Washington D.C. first for the Post Office beginning in 1867 then the Dept. of Interior in 1870. Somehow he made his way to Sedalia Missouri and began work for the KATY railroad in 1872, starting as a clerk. There he met Mary Ida Delamater and they married Jan. 20, 1876. He remained with the railroad the rest of his life, becoming vice president at one time. He died in Houston on Dec. 21, 1911.

Hello to all the Sweeney Clan
My name is Shirley (nee Sweeney) Gore,I am from Australia. I am looking for information on my 3 times Great Grandparents Timothy Sweeney born about 1797 in Cork, Ireland not sure exactly where. He was a farmer and he married Johannah Piggott in 1837 Ireland, on his death certificate it states his father's name was Michael. Timothy and Johannah had two sons, the first son being my 2 times Great Grandfather Michael Sweeney born 1837/39 in Cork Ireland and second son was John Sweeney born about 1840 Cork. From what I have found out Johanna and son Michael arrived Australia on the Dorigo in 1860 and I cannot find when Timothy and son John arrived but according to Timothy's death certificate he was in the Colony (Australia) for 28 years and the date of his death was 7th December 1875 at Campbelltown NSW Australia.
I Have also heard that Timothy could of dropped Mac from the Sweeney name, but I am not sure of this.
I do Hope someone can help me
Good luck to all who are searching for their families

Hello Sweeney clan! I am looking for the Pennsylvania connection in our
family. My great grandfather came to the US in about 1858. He was in PA for
a while before moving to San Francisco where he eventually settled and opened
a successful stockyards there. I'm guessing that one of his brothers might
have settled in PA before he got there. His brothers were James and Edward
(and possibly Hugh). He also had three sisters, Nora, Bridget and Kate.
After a time, he sold his SF business and purchased a piece of land in
Donegal. He moved his family back to Ireland to the Carrowcannon House.
They remained for 8-10 years. He worked for land reform and was imprisoned
for 18 months. Then my grandfather and the eldest sister returned to the US.
They stayed in PA for a year or two and my great aunt went to school at Mt.
de Chantal in WV, close to Philadelphia. Any help or sonnections would be
greatly appreciated.
