Hello to all the Sweeney's, World Wide! I am Theodore (Ted) Charles Sweeney of Winsted, Connecticut, USA, and am interested in any Ireland information that may be available on my line of Sweeney's. My Great Grandfather, his wife and two children left Ireland in C. 1866, entered the US through Boston, MA. and settled in the Northwest corner of Connecticut in the Village of East Canaan, in the small farming town of North Canaan. It is firmly believed by family members that the Sweeney's came from County Cork, Ireland. I have seen nothing to verify this, nor have I seen any information of what town they may have come from.
I am also interested in any information on my GGrandfather's brother Daniel Sweeney. His family is believed to have settled in North Canaan, Connecticut, moved to the Providence Rhode Island area and then onto Naugatuck, Connecticut. I have been unable to find the "tie-in" with the Sweeney's of Naugatuck. Daniel's son, Owen settled in the Brooklyn New York Area, but we have no other information on his family.

My line of the Sweeney's goes like this:

Searching for information on 1) great-grandparents, Patrick Sweeney and Bridgett Monroe.
Patrick was 50 years old on the Pittsburgh, PA 1910 Census and had been in America since 1886. Bridgett was 56 years old on the Pittsburgh, PA 1910 Census and had been in America since 1876. Both possibly born in Co. Galway or Mayo Ireland and married in Pittsburgh. Bridgett had a boarding house in the Hill District of Pittsburgh and Patrick was a construction worker. Patrick's siblings were John, Mary, Michael and Margaret. Not much known about their origins in Ireland or about Bridgett's family. Patrick died in 1952.
2) great great grandparents, Patrick Sweeney and Bridgett McMahon. Patrick may have made a trip to US prior to marrying Bridgett. Not much known about these two although there may be Kerrigans somewhere in their line. Thanks for your help!

Carole Sweeney-Roemer
No. 87

Hello:
My name is Carole Sweeney-Roemer. I live in Kenoza Lake, New York. I am trying to find when my Grandfather James came over from Ireland. My brother John (Jack) has been tracking down the history for years. He has gone so far as to go to Donegal for information. And has been to many reunions.
The only ones left in the family now are cousins and we all come up with different stories on all of it. As far as I recall Grandfather Sweeney, James J. I believe was born in Ireland. I was told Cork others were told Donegal. He had two other siblings as far as I can remember Katherine Sweeney-Clinton.........who lived in Tannersville, New York. And Mary Sweeney (I don't recall her marriage name) who lived in Long Eddie, New York. I believe Grandfather died in or around 1935 he was about 56. Aunt Kate died in 1948 I believe and Aunt Mary in 1961.
Now we really don't know if we are Mac or Mc. There seems to be a controversy on that.
James J. Sweeney had 3 children: A son James a daughter Caroline and another son John William. They are all dead. My father John was the last of the line,,, I have only one sibling my brother John R. who resides in California.
Caroline Sweeney-Trier: Had 3 children: Thomas........Patricia......and Robert
James had 2 children...........Carol Mae Sweeney_McDevitt..who resides in Donegal and her younger brother James who is in the states.
So in other words what I am looking for is some type of information on James J. Sweeney who as far as we know was born in Ireland, and came to Ellis Island in New York. We have no idea if his parents came with him or for that matter who they are. I remember my father talking about Cork, but am not certain if Granddad was born there or if that's where his family came from.
If you need anything else, please feel free to contact me. Thank you so much.

Sincerely,
Carole Sweeney-Roemer

My husband's mother was a Sweeney and we (my husband and I) are looking for some info on her grandfather, Patrick Sweeney. We are living in Wyoming.

Patrick was born on the 8th of July, 1849, near Neigh, Ireland. He was just two years old when his parents(the BIG question-WHO?) moved to the United States and made their home in Detroit, Michigan. In 1869 Mr. Sweeney left Detroit going to Lucan, Canada, where he engaged in farming. Here he met his helpmate Miss Catherine Cotter and they were married on November 24th,1874. They resided in Canada for four years. In 1879 they moved to Emerson, Nebraska where they continued farming for twenty years. In 1886 they moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was employed by a large construction company, which took him to several of the adjoining states. They later moved to Sioux City, and lived until 1903 when they took up their homestead in Sweeney SD. The town was named after him. In 1920 Mr. and Mrs. Sweeney retired from the farm and moved to Presho, SD Patrick died in 1930 in Presho, South Dakota.
Mr. Sweeney leaves to mourn his loss, six children. Mary Sweeney, Patrick J Sweeney, S.T. Sweeney, F.M Sweeney, Mrs. W.P. Kelly, and John Sweeney and 23 grandchildren.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Tina Walker
